Everest Fire and Rescue
Everest Fire and Rescue was officially inaugurated by the Pasang Lhamu Regional Parliament in 2023.
The new Everest Fire and Rescue service is a volunteer service where local people work for the benefit of their communities in both fire prevention and fire fighting. The teams are comprised of males and females normally resident in the Khumbu villages.
There are three local Trustees responsible for the service who are supported by external advisers with experience in fire and rescue.
Operational units are now both trained and equipped in Lukla and Namche for firefighting. Currently this is from the outside of buildings. In time it is anticipated that breathing apparatus will be introduced extending the capabilities of the teams.
A trial programme to improve helipad safety has been run in Pheriche and Dingboche. Teams resident within 200 metres of the landing sites are trained and equipped for snatch rescue.
Later in 2024 it is planned that training will be undertaken in both Phakding and Monjo. Extending the helipad safety to higher villages is anticipated. As the water supply in the villages improves with larger storage tanks and buried pipes with fire hydrants effective fire fighting will become more possible.
Everest Fire and Rescue are currently supported by Scottish Fire and Rescue. This support comes in the form of both equipment and training. The generosity of several private individuals has also been critical to our development.
Prior to the Scottish support our communities have benefited from donations of hose and nozzles from Australia and the UK. This has allowed us to minimise fire damage as best we could with limited resources. To those that have previously supported us; Thank you.
As we move forward on a more professional basis we will become more effective in our work. In addition we will be better protected from the risk of injury.
Our teams work closely with other agencies in our efforts to have a safer environment. The cooperation with Nepal Police, Nepal Army and the Civil Aviation Authority employees at Lukla airport is valued tremendously.
As Everest Fire snd Rescue develops we will extend our operations to other villages. We will also become involved in rescue support for local people and trekkers in difficulty in our
mountains.

Our development costs are obviously substantial. Primary support is from private donors. Local government resources are limited with so many tasks they have to support.
We welcome anyone wishing to support our work. Donations can be made to;
Any funds are managed transparently by The Trustees.
